More Mortal Shell is on the way.
Mortal Shell from developer Cold Symmetry is receiving an expansion on August 18th that adds a roguelike mode that mixes Mortal Shell’s frolic through Fallgrim. It will also add a new shell for players that can be played in both the expansion and the base game. The new trailer for the expansion shows all the new features.
The new trailer is a showcase for Mortal Shell’s methodical battle, but it also serves as a thematic link for expansion, as a woman’s voice asks your character if they’re glad they’re not flesh and blood. Mortal Shell focuses on equippable grenades that you can impersonate, much like armor. She also comments that she cannot be easily killed, a nod to the villain’s villainous nature.
The Virtuous Cycle randomly assigns the enemies you encounter as well as the 100+ new skills you can find and incorporate into your play style. You also get your former teacher’s case, Hadern, which features a new skill tree and a new way to play the game. Finally, a new transforming weapon, the axetana, does what it says on the tin, switching between an ax and a pair of katanas on a whim.
Having an expansion that fundamentally changes the base game is a great way to add replayability to a game, and given how hot roguelikes are right now, making a roguelike mode, especially one, is a smart move Action game like Mortal Shell. Cold Symmetry did a very good job of keeping the game up to date with a free upgrade to next generation consoles that have already been released.
Mortal Shell: The Virtuous Cycle will be available on August 18 for Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.com for $ 7.99.
