Final Fantasy! Monster hunter! Sound.

A year late and amid a cloud of controversy, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have officially started to a soundtrack of well-known video game music.

In the traditional Parade of Nations of the Olympic Games, athletes from all participating countries entered the Tokyo Olympic Stadium to the sounds of Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Music from Monster Hunter, Soulcalibur, Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Quest was also played. Even the recently renamed PES got a glimpse.

There was no music from Nintendo, though – although Mario himself appeared in the closing ceremony of the previous Olympics, teasing Tokyo by picking up the baton.

Accordingly Nikkei, the full list of tracks used during the ceremony includes 19 themes from Japanese games if you want to try to watch and select them again:
